Ability to edit multiple Visio drawings for the same project at the same time

Since Visio is now warning us when we have files that have more than 10-pages and most of our larger projects require more than 10 pages, we have started breaking out our drawings into three files. Plans, Schematics, and Elevations. This can be cumbersome when making modifications on a device plan, but need to also adjust the elevations since after we make the change in one file, we must close the first file, then open the second file, make the change, then return to the first file. If we could have both files open at the same time and be able to edit both at the same time, it would make this so much easier.

Eric Kalpakoff - In Visio in the docked click "Open Drawing" link.
This will open a dialog with Visio drawings in same SI project and you can also create new ones.

Naresh Nichani It amazes me how I can use this software every day, take the time to explore around and try all the features, and still managed to be in the dark about features that are staring me right in the face. Thank you! I had always assumed it closed the current drawing and opened another and never bothered to read about it or try it.

As I am trying this out, I am noticing that when you have two drawings open at the same time and switch pages where it needs to sync OPRs, it is re-maximizing the drawing. I have two screens. I expanded Visio to span both screens and put one drawing on each screen. I had a schematic and a plan drawing open. When I was changing pages on the schematic, it maximized the schematic drawing. IDK if that is a Visio glitch or D-Tools feature. Cumbersome.

Actually, this isn't working as expected. I can view both files but cannot meaninfully edit either with both open. It is not allowing me to drop shapes from the BOM on one drawing if they exist on the other. It gives me the error that it is already on the page. It doesn't seem to be tracking which drawing is active to know if the item is on the page or not.

Eric Kalpakoff- We are working to fix this issue. Thanks for reporting. We can replicate this.

Eric Kalpakoff - When you use Open Drawing in the docked window to open drawings they open in same Visio instance. We share the Proejct Editor across multiple drawings for same project in same Visio instance. Now sure how in this case you got drawings in 2 different monitors with Open Drawing in the docked window.

Eric Kalpakoff - thanks

Naresh Nichani I had to un-maximize the main Visio window so I could stretch it across both screens, then 'Open Drawing' like you showed me. Doing so allowed me to see both drawings side-by-side, one on each screen.

Eric Kalpakoff We use visio with 200+ pages for alot of projects. we did buy some mid level gaming pc's and sometimes you need to wait a minute or 2 for opr sync, but its workable.

Eric Kalpakoff - This issue is fixed. When you "Open Drawing" the Visio icons on the Project Editor will sync with active page on the current drawing. Test with latest v23 build.

I hear you — that workflow sounds frustrating. The good news is that Visio does allow multiple files to be open at the same time, but it defaults to showing them in separate windows. You can use Window → Arrange All or simply switch between openskycc them via the taskbar to edit both side by side. Another option is to enable tabbed documents (under Options → Advanced → Display) so you can quickly flip between open drawings without closing one to open another.
